I live right on the J Church line in San Francisco, and there’s a fire station in the next block. So we have quite a bit of ambient noise through the night and early morning. I had gotten used to having my sleep disturbed, when my pal Helen lent me a white noise / sound generator to try. The thing is, those sound generators (essentially clock radios with some extra sounds programmed in) always repeat. So, after listening to the forest sounds for a couple of nights, I could identify the pattern and hear where the repeat started. It was distracting. So I set to work to build an ambient noise generator that wouldn’t repeat.
With some help from my dad (he made these cricket recordings some years ago), I created some loops and a timer, and here you have it.
